In block 29, a market square had replaced the terminus of the Victoria and Sidney Railway. Fifty years later, housing and other buildings were removed from blocks 28A, 28B and 29 and this area was reinvented as Centennial Square, with Cormorant Street east of Government renamed Pandora Avenue. Just south of Pandora on this map, the Prince George Hotel was constructed by Lim Bang on Government Street in 1911. This map shows that new Chinese tenements were constructed in the centre of block 31. This three-section, two-storey lodging house was built by Quan Yuen Yen and Joe Gar Chow in 1912 and within it was a passageway that connected to two buildings constructed by Michael Hart on Fisgard and Herald Streets in 1890. By 1913, the Hart building on Herald Street was a Chinese laundry with a drying area out the back. This walkway is now known as Dragon Alley and the central building was updated in 2000-2001 by Moore Paterson Architects. By 1913, a new motion picture theatre appeared on the corner of Government and Cormorant Streets. Fire Insurance Plans for Victoria, BC, 1911, revised 1913 (Royal BC Museum, BC Archives).
